It’s a question Livingetc put to a selection of leading kitchen designers, and one we were pleased to be part of. In its September 2026 feature, “If You Couldn’t Change Your Kitchen Color for the Next 10 Years, What Would You Pick?”, our Head of Design, Matthew Andrews, shared his approach to creating a kitchen scheme with staying power.
For Matthew, the answer isn’t about choosing the safest colour. It’s about creating contrast and giving the kitchen enough character to develop with the home.
“I’m planning to pair tiled flooring with a moody, darker green door front, then bring in a big pop of colour,” Matthew explains. His proposed scheme combines rich green cabinetry with a stronger accent colour, marble and a butcher block island.
The thinking behind it is simple. Rather than designing around whatever happens to be trending now, we believe colour should have a relationship with the architecture, materials and character of the space.
“Done properly, contrasting colors don’t fade or date the way a single safe or trendy color eventually will,” Matthew says. “If anything, I think they get more characterful with age.”
It’s an approach we bring to our own kitchen design. Colour is only one part of the decision. The proportions of the room, natural light, materials, cabinetry and how everything will sit together over time all matter just as much.
