In a recent Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms design challenge, Cor Domi’s Head of Design, Matthew Andrews, was invited to develop a concept for a family seeking to transform their 15th-century home into a more functional and sociable living space.
The homeowners wanted to create a large open-plan kitchen and dining area while maintaining the integrity of the property’s historic architecture. The challenge was to introduce contemporary functionality without compromising the building’s heritage.
Matthew’s proposal centred around improving the flow between cooking, dining and entertaining spaces while celebrating the home’s original features. Rather than competing with the property’s character, the design sought to complement it through a carefully considered material palette and bespoke joinery solutions.
Storage played a key role in the concept. Tailored cabinetry was designed to maximise usability while maintaining a calm and uncluttered appearance. The layout also focused on creating stronger connections between family activities, ensuring the kitchen could function as both a practical workspace and a social hub.
Natural materials, thoughtful detailing and timeless design principles formed the foundation of the proposal. This approach reflects Cor Domi’s wider philosophy of creating kitchens that feel deeply connected to the architecture around them while supporting the way clients live today.
Historic homes often require a more sensitive design response than contemporary properties. By balancing craftsmanship, functionality and architectural respect, it is possible to create spaces that feel both timeless and entirely relevant to modern life.
