The True Family Kitchen: Designing a Home Around Everyday Living

A successful family kitchen is about far more than aesthetics. It must support daily routines, encourage connection and remain functional for years to come. These principles formed the foundation of the Hurlingham Park project, a bespoke kitchen and joinery scheme designed by Cor Domi for a busy London family.

Recently featured by The Kitchen Think, the project showcases how thoughtful design, natural materials and intelligent planning can create a home that feels both practical and welcoming.

The client’s vision was clear from the outset. They wanted a true family kitchen where cooking, dining and spending time together could happen naturally. Rather than creating a showpiece space, the priority was to design a room that felt warm, comfortable and built to last.

To achieve this, the existing rear extension was completely reworked. A larger footprint, increased ceiling heights, generous rooflights and garden-facing glazing transformed what had previously been a constrained kitchen into a bright and highly functional family hub.

At the heart of the design sits a carefully planned island that separates preparation and dining areas while maintaining strong visual connections across the room. Every aspect of the layout was designed around how the family actually lives, from the coffee station and cooking zones through to the walk-in pantry and tailored storage solutions.

Materiality played a central role throughout the project. Timber doors, lacquered green oak veneers and Taj Mahal quartzite surfaces introduce warmth, texture and longevity. The result is a kitchen that feels refined without becoming overly formal.
